What You Need to Know

All About Coaching

Click on each tab below to find important information about coaching – what it is in general, what is my particular coaching method and philosophy, as well as the ethical standards I hold myself to.  For more information on coaching in general, please check out my profession’s most respected governing association, International Coaching Federation (ICF).
A Partnership

Between you and myself, coaching is focused on designing and implementing meaningful changes in your professional and personal life.   Coaching with me is:

  • Solution focused – Moving you toward your desired future outcomes, instead of concentrating on past experiences or reasons for present dissatisfaction.
  • Systematic – I ask powerful questions to help you understand the holistic nature of your situation, seeing how positive change can fit into your bigger picture.
  • Centered on YOU – I trust your inner resources and skills and see you as the master of your domain. I don’t provide advice, I question you in a way that allows you to weigh options and possible outcomes and decide for yourself which course to take.
  • Action Oriented – Pursuing change in specific, inspired steps that lead to fundamental shifts in attitude, behavior and habit formation.
Enable New Learning

Think of that feeling you get when you read a good book, visit a new place, meet someone new – you form a relationship with this new viewpoint, whether you adopt it or not. You definitely broaden your awareness. A coaching relationship enables exactly that – a deepened awareness of your self, how you see the world and what you need to change about yourself.  You will eliminate tunnel vision, with the perspective of a trusted partner, who understands your business and you, inside out.

Go Outside Your Comfort Zone

Explore ideas and situations in a safe and supportive environment with someone who isn’t afraid of correcting you and pushing you to think big.  This process will help you discover your innate creativity and make your ideas a reality, by focusing accountability on what really matters.  Ultimately, you will feel more confident, network better and create a cycle of renewal that can sustain you in all situations.

Minimize Errors

I work with clients who may not have your exact circumstance, but have likely had to go through similar processes to get to where they are.  When you contemplate a new move, we can examine the results my connections have experienced by pursuing a particular idea (while respecting confidentiality, of course.)

Enjoy many “Aaaah” moments.

Sharing concerns with a coach offers two advantages.  First, it acts as an emotional release. Second, sharing concerns with a third party helps excavate the truth behind those emotions, and we can unearth the reasons why those emotions exist and look at the triggers that caused them in the first place. Once you know what triggers your negative emotions — and subsequent behavior — then you see stress levels dissipate and performance soar.

Get Feedback

People naturally shy away from having difficult conversations. Chances are that getting the feedback you need is few and far between for the simple fact that subordinates don’t want to get fired. Alternatively, I have no emotional investment in the matter and am doing my job by providing open feedback. In times of change, coaching serves as a solid backdrop of support. I can help reign you back onto earth and get your feet planted firmly on the ground and avoid those matters that try to push you away from where you should be.

Identify the Issue

Think about a specific issue to address, examples may be that:

  • You know you can be better at what you do. You just don’t know how to make that happen.
  • You are consumed with running your business or department, and need help with keeping an eye on the big picture.
  • You are preparing yourself for a promotion.
  • You’ve just been promoted and you want to be sure your first 90-days aren’t your last 90-days.
  • You need to adjust quickly to a new circumstance.
  • Your work life has taken over your entire life.
  • You have employees you find challenging to manage.
  • You find yourself working for a difficult boss.
  • You have a performance weakness that, left unattended, could spread and negatively impact other areas of your performance.

The issue may be more general, or may have been identified by someone else – it doesn’t need to be remedial in nature.  Whatever the case may be, just be ready to change.

Schedule an Exploratory Coaching Session

If you haven’t been coached before, it is critical that you experience it first hand without feeling pressured to sign up.  For this very reason, I offer a two hour exploratory coaching session to all potential clients.  We will engage in a powerful and dynamic conversation in order to determine what you want to accomplish, and how I can help you do so.

This is a no-strings-attached conversation – it is free of charge to you, and at no point will I “sell” you on my programs.  In those two hours we will both know whether we “click”. Next, you decide, without any pressure from me, on your ability to proceed, and in which way – through a One on One or Group Coaching Program (see Programs tab).

The only requirement for the Exploratory Two Hour Coaching Session is that but you commit to showing up ready and open to new ideas.  This intro session, as well as any future sessions, has to be in a no distraction zone – no surfing the internet, or checking your phone.

The Logistics

The majority of my coaching engagements take place via telephone or videoconference.  With clients located all over the world, used to conducting business globally, coaching via telephone or videoconference is just a natural progression.

Depending on client preference and type of coaching engagement, I am available to travel and coach in person.  This may be necessary when working with corporate clients spanning more than one coaching engagement.

We work together weekly and bi weekly, and depending on type of engagement, may do daily or periodic “check ins” between coaching sessions to keep you on track.

Ready, Set, Coach!

Now the real work starts.  To learn more about the work, see the Programs tab.
